Yamunotri
Yamunotri is the origin of river Yamuna and it is First Site of the Char Dham Yatra. It is surrounded by the Mountains on all sides. Yamunotri Temple is located at about 3295 meters above sea level. It is located in the Uttarakashi District of Uttarakhand and 129 KM from main district headquarter. The actual temple is only accessible by a 6 km walk trek from Janki chatti and Kharsali and 13 km from the town of Hanuman Chatti.
Yamunotri is Known as the origin place of river Yamuna and also seat of goddess Yamuna (known as daughter of lord sun). River Yamuna is also the Second most worshiped river after Ganga. There is a Hot water Thermal Situated near Main Temple (Surya Kund). The Rice and Potato’s are cooked in this hot water and Served as Parsad of Yamuna.
The Best time to visit Yamunotri Temple:- Gate Opens in Summers on the Occasion of Akshay Tritya usually in the month of April and opens till October as the temple is closed in winters due to heavy Snowfall and Hindu Mythology. The Temple is Closed right after Bhai Dooj and its deity is Shifted to Kharsali Village where its worship continues during next six months of winter. One can visit this temple which is named as Sheetkalin Yamuna Temple.
How to reach :-
Jolly grant airport Dehradun. You can travel by road or by helicopter. By road it takes around 5-6 hrs. approx. till janki chatti, the last motorable road. You have to take a Taxi from the Airport for Kharsali or Janki chatti. If you want to travel by helicopter then you have to go to Sahastradhara helipad in Dehradun. Helicopter will directly take you to Kharsali.
Dehradun is 170 kms. from Janki Chatti (Starting point of 5-6 K.M. Trek to Yamunotri) You can book a Taxi or Take a Bus From Dehradun ISBT near to Railway Station to Janki Chatti which takes approx. 5-6 hrs. to reach.
