Gangotri

Gangotri is Known as the origin of river Ganga. It is situated in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand State in India. It is located on the Higher Range of Himalayas, at the height of 3100 Meters above sea level and 99kms far from Uttarkashi main city centre. It is also one of the four sites of Char Dham Yatra.

The Origin of the Holy river is from Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19km trek from Gangotri. Goddess Ganga descended here when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from the locks of his hair. Ganga river at the source is Called Bhagirathi and when it meets Alaknanda River in Devprayag it is called Ganga.
The Best time to visit Gangotri Temple Gate opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya as per Hindu Mythology falling in the month of April or May usually and opens till October or November as the temple is closed right after Diwali on Bhai Dooj and its diety is Shifted to Mukhba Village where its worship continues during next six months of winter.

Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun.You can travel by road or by Helicopter from Dehradun. If you want to travel by road you have to take a taxi from Airport for Gangotri, by road it takes around 7-8 Hrs. Approx. to reach Gangotri. If you want to travel by helicopter then you have to go to Sahastradhara Helipad in Dehradun. Helicopter will directly take you to Harsil, from there it takes 40 minutes by car.

Dehradun Railway Station is 237 kms. from Gangotri. You can book a Taxi or Take a Bus From Dehradun to Uttarkashi from there you can book local transport to reach Gangotri Temple and the complete journey will take approx. 7-8 hours to reach the Temple.
